Student Hikes and You
Do you want a break from the stress and work of school? If yes, perhaps you should sign up for a student hike.
NMT gym has been providing students with free hikes the past few semesters, coordinated by NMT gym employee Melissa Begay. Begay has been hosting the events since 2016, and believes that the hikes allow at risk students to take a break from the stress and pressures of academic life to relax and socialize.
Tech students who partake in these hikes are glad for the chance to join in on the fun and experience of nature. For some students it’s a chance to see trails they never knew existed in the local Socorro area.
For instance, Tech student Justine Zimmerly says “I attend them because it is a lot of fun and we go on hikes that I otherwise would not go on myself or know about the location”. Another student, Evelyn Byrd, says “I love to hike and it's a good break from working on school work”. Students on the last hike to Bursum Spring described the experience as fun, dirty, and stress relieving.
Any student interested in attending future hikes should contact Melissa Begay before the hike either in person or through email. The gym provides all transportation to and from the trail head, so all students need to bring is a liter of water, a snack if needed, sunscreen, and their fun personalities. The next scheduled hike is March 25, and will be to Strawberry Peak. They will meet 8:30 am on Sunday morning at the swimming pool parking lot. The hike is challenging, so if you're going don't forget to bring water, durable hiking boots, and sun protection!
